Long-Term Residential Drug Rehab Centers In Nunavut

Within Nunavut, there are limited resources to help addicts and their families, and unfortunately few facilities that provide long-term drug and alcohol treatment. Most of the treatment programs available in Nunavut operate as outpatient programs, detox centers, or counseling services. For many addicts living within the area, it is hard to get help, and one of the barriers is attempting to access treatment resources in other parts of the country. Regardless of what part of the country a person is living in, drug and alcohol addiction problems are there, and this includes the many communities throughout Nunavut. When people use drugs, there are numerous dangers they will face that will affect their physical, mental, and even spiritual well-being.

When a person begins to use drugs, they may not be aware of these dangers, but one should look at the following:

  • Physical and mental tolerance – a person will develop a physical tolerance to drugs, and this is never more prevalent than with opiates. Opiates, whether they are prescribed or acquired illegally will cause a physical dependency if they are taken for long periods of time. This is also applicable to with alcohol, and many other drugs; the body becomes dependent on them and requires them to function.
  • Possible overdose – there is a risk of overdose with most drugs a person abuses, some riskier than others. Throughout Canada, there have been epidemics of overdose that has been directly connected to such drugs as Oxycontin and Fentanyl, and of course overdose caused by excessive alcohol use. This is a very real danger, and the longer a person abuses drugs the more they are at risk of overdosing.
  • The fear of withdrawal – one of the biggest reasons addicts stay on the drugs they are using is the fear of withdrawal, because withdrawal pains are very difficult to go through. The detox programs in Nunavut help treat people from all types of addiction and will assist them through moderate or severe detox.
