What is PCP Addiction?

Canada is a country that has a problem with PCP and PCP addiction, although it has been decreasing slightly over the last years. For example, the number of PCP seizures in Canada has gone down 92 percent from the years 1997 and 2007. In Nova Scotia, a survey showed that over ten percent of the population had used PCP in their life. So that means that a lot of them might still have a drug addiction problem and are using it right now. There was 1.5 percent of the population that said they had used PCP in the last year.

Quebec also has a few problems with PCP and its addiction. There was a major PCP lab that was actively producing this drug in a city a little north of Quebec City. They had quite a few clients who were abusing and developing PCP addiction and still are. In addition, they often use PCP with other drugs and so develop multiple drug addictions. In 2004, a study showed that 2.4 percent of Quebec students between 12 and 17 years old had taken PCP in the year that had just past and runs the risk of getting caught in PCP addiction. Although there are still way too many people that start PCP, this statistic showed an improvement of 1.3 percent compared to 2002. In Montreal, a survey was made in 2003 with young people (from 14 to 23 years old) and almost 10 percent of them admitted that they used PCP more often than any other drugs during the last six months, which can lead to serious PCP addiction. This means that PCP addiction is still a significant problem with young people nowadays.

Ontario has also seen an improvement in the last few years where PCP addiction is concerned. There were two surveys made with Ontario students, in 2003 and 2005, and the percentage of students who are addicted to PCP or at least uses it went from 2.2% in 2003 to 1.1% in 2005. This is a very good sign for the population of Ontario and specifically Toronto where PCP addiction is concerned. PCP is a drug that is very addictive and so even after a few tries a person can develop a lot of symptoms. One that is symptomatic of PCP addiction is that the person will do the most unusual things to get more drugs. Psychological dependence and cravings are notable when one starts to develop PCP addiction. This addiction can cause memory loss, depression, and various mood disorders. PCP addiction is a very serious thing as the symptoms can sometimes last for years after the person has stopped taking PCP.

PCP Treatment

There was a survey done in some province of Canada which showed the ratio of PCP use within the student community. New Brunswick had the highest percentage (3.9%) and then came to Nova Scotia with 3.2% of the students saying to have used it at least once. Then Quebec came in third with 2.4%, then there was Prince Edward Island with 1.5 %, and finally, there was Ontario with 1.1 %. In 2003, a Canadian study reported that five percent of the injection drug users had used PCP over the last three months.

Phenylcyclohexylpiperidine, also known as PCP or sometimes angel dust, is a drug that is an anesthetic, hallucinogenic, and also a neurotoxin. The effects of the drugs don't necessarily last all that long (a few hours usually) but it stays in the body for longer than that. There are variations of the PCP drug which can be found on the street. The drug can be very dangerous as it affects the neurons and the brain. That is one of the reasons why it is imperative that they attend drug rehab and kick the habit. Sometimes, the only thing that can make a person stop taking drugs of this kind is a good drug rehab program.

PCP affects the brain in a very marked way, but there are easier signs that can be noticed of somebody under the influence of PCP staggering, mood swings, hallucinations, bloodshot eyes, loss of balance, and trouble walking. There is definitely a withdrawal period that comes with the stopping of PCP usage, this period can be hard on the person's body and mind. Some of the symptoms of withdrawal include memory loss and depression. Those kinds of problems can last long after the person ceased using PCP.

There are several places where you can find help for PCP addiction in Canada. Most of the usual drug rehabs found in the country can account for PCP treatment. There are different drug rehabilitation settings such as residential, outpatient, etc. Is a detox needed? Those are all things that need to be taken into consideration when choosing a drug rehab. One of our counselors can do an assessment and give you the best option on PCP programs for you or someone you love. Let us help you.
