Drug & Alcohol Treatment Services For Pregnant Women In Ontario

The province of Ontario has the largest population of people in Canada living in the Greater Toronto Area. With such a diverse population of people all living in the same area drug and alcohol addiction is an on-going problem for many of the cities and town in the area. Throughout the province are numerous drugs and alcohol treatment options available to men, women, and youth along with specific programs for other demographics. One of these particular drug rehabilitation options include treatment options for pregnant women. In the province of Ontario, there are over a few different resources available to help a pregnant woman who is battling a drug and or alcohol addiction. In most cases, the woman is already an addict before they become pregnant, and that is what makes it so dangerous as the baby has already been exposed to the effects of the drugs and alcohol, and this may cause permanent damage to the baby if it survives. All the programs available for pregnant women already provide drug treatment programs for women only, and these services offer safe environments for women to receive effective drug treatment. Pregnant women will require more specialized care and medical supervision, especially during the withdrawal phase of their treatment. This is to help ensure the patient is not put at risk, and the baby is not put at risk also. In many cases, drug abuse while pregnant will cause some severe medical problems for the child, and some of these problems will be with the child for the rest of his or her life. In some extreme cases, there can be a stillbirth or a premature birth caused by on-going drug abuse.
