Marcel’s take on teen treatment

When a parent calls about a teenager, the hardest part of my job is helping them separate what they are feeling from what the situation actually requires. Parents are scared, and that is understandable. But fear can push toward decisions that are not right for the person in front of you.

I remember a mom who called me about her 17-year-old daughter. The girl was still in school, had good grades, and was smoking weed here and there. The mom was emotional and did not know what to do, and she wanted to get her daughter into a long-term residential program. I told her that was the wrong call. A 6-month residential program for a teenager who is still functioning, still in school, and showing no serious warning signs is not treatment, it is an overreaction that could do more harm than good.

What I suggested instead was outpatient support and regular drug testing. Marijuana stays in the system for 30 days, so you can track it accurately and hold the person accountable without pulling them out of their life. That is the right level of intervention for that situation.

The question I always ask when a family calls about a teenager is: what is actually happening? Not what are you afraid might happen, but what is actually happening right now? The answer to that question determines the level of care. Sometimes it is outpatient. Sometimes it is residential. The emotional weight a parent is carrying should not be the thing that decides it.
