Marcel’s take on long-term treatment

When a family calls me about getting someone into treatment, one of the first things they ask is whether the program is co-ed. It comes up almost every time, and it is not a trivial question. Where someone does their treatment matters, and who they are doing it with matters too.

The bigger principle I always come back to is environment. One of the most important things a residential program does is put distance between the person and the environment they were using in. That means the people, the places, the situations that became tied to their using. For a lot of women, that environment includes a relationship, a living situation, or a social circle that is part of the problem. A program that puts real distance between her and all of that gives her a chance to actually work on herself without the pull of that environment interfering.

A women-only program does something similar inside the program itself. It changes the social dynamic in a way that can make it easier for some people to focus on the work. Whether that matters for a specific person depends on their history and their situation. But it is always worth asking the question, and it is one of the things I go through during every intake conversation.
