Steroids Addiction In Canada

First of all, there are many different kinds of steroids that can be found. There are animal steroids, sex steroids, anabolic Definition of the word anabolic steroids, etc. The most commonly used and abused steroids are anabolic ones. On the street when one talks about steroids, he usually means anabolic steroids. This drug mostly affects hormones related to testosterone. The protein synthesis process is enhanced when the drug is taken, and so it builds up anabolism, especially where muscles are concerned. This is what will make a person’s muscles grow a lot faster. Steroids can be addictive and so one often has to go through a steroid detox in order to get rid of the steroid addiction.

Steroids Information

Metabolic and anabolic – androgenic steroids were initially studied in experimental animals. The results of the testis on metabolic processes in tissues other than the accessory sex organs have been demonstrated for a long time. The drastic effects on vigor and energy revealed by Brown-Seguard (1889) after the self-administration of testis glycerol extracts focused attention on energy metabolism. Early attempts to collaborate these results were conflicting and unconvincing. Later, numerous investigators gave extracts to experimental animals, with small and questionable results on energy and nitrogen metabolism (Koch, 1989; Moore, 1939).

Steroid Effects

  • Skeletal growth and maturation
  • Bone resorption and bone formation, effects on serum calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphates
  • The effect of testosterone on calcium and phosphorus balances
  • The effect of other synthetic anabolic agents on calcium and phosphorus balance
  • Commonly, the more carbon molecules in the added acid group that are esterified, the longer the action the steroid has on the body. Raising the number of carbons subsequently increases the affinity of the anabolic steroid.

What is Steroids Addiction?

Although steroids are not as big a problem as some other illicit drugs, there are still a lot of people who are addicted to steroids. In 2004, the statistics said that 0.6 percent of Canadians had used anabolic steroids. It is actually illegal to traffic or produce steroids in Canada; furthermore, it is a substance that is in the Schedule IV Definition of the word Schedule IV of the Canadian Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Canada has been having problems with steroids; the problems are scattered all over Canada. However, the solution exists, if people need it, in the form of drug rehabs that help them deal with their addiction.

Just a few years ago, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, a drug bust happened involving anabolic steroids. The steroids were being sold in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. There was even a man who was said to have bought for over 600,000 dollars of steroid, which is the very proof that he was really struggling with steroids addiction. In 2002, in the Quebec province, principally in Montreal and Quebec City, they did a study on athletes and found that almost one percent of them had developed a steroid's drug addiction. 70 percent of those who were using steroids were under seventeen years old, which means that steroids addiction starts at a younger age. That is why there are some drug rehabs that take in minors and help them overcome their steroids drug addiction.

Steroids addiction is very common with people who start using these drugs. A lot of people start using steroids only to build muscles, but it can often escalate to a full-on addiction. Once a person gets addicted to steroids, there are different symptoms that come in. The people struggling with steroids addiction will show anxiety, exhilaration, depression and various mood swings. It is very dangerous for the person’s health as the steroids affect not only the muscles but also different organs. The addiction to steroids can eventually become fatal. Before it gets there, it's important to get them into a drug rehab center and have them get through the program and off the drug. Help is possible.

Steroids Treatment

Steroids is found in Canada and it is actively being abused. In the Canadian Olympic participants and other athletes, steroid use is rarely found. Actually, it is a myth that all athletes use steroids. Statistics show that almost 80 percent of all steroids users are not athletes that compete and are not bodybuilders. Steroids are most popular with people between the age of 19 years and 40 years old. This makes for a very wide range of people who might get addicted to steroids and who might need to get into a drug rehab treatment in Canada.

Steroids are a drug which is mainly composed of synthesized testosterone. When it first came out, it was used in the army to produce elite soldiers. But nowadays, it is usually used to get faster results in training and often used to make males look better. It helps accelerate cell growth and so produces increased muscle mass. It comes in different forms, such as tablets, creams, and liquid form which can be injected.

There are very obvious symptoms which show when one starts abusing steroids, these are:

  • Acne breakouts
  • Shrunken testicles
  • gynecomastia Definition of the word gynecomastia
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Loss of hair
  • Liver problems
  • Aggression

Steroid abuse can bring about very devastating effects when one tries to quit it. The withdrawal symptoms can include:

  • Depression
  • Intense cravings
  • Suicidal tendencies
  • Fever
  • Body ache
  • Diarrhea

Steroids and Adolescent

Adolescents who use anabolic steroids generally do so without medical supervision or guidance. This hormonal manipulation becomes an important focus as they discover other users and suppliers. Several youth users become obsessed with the lifestyle of discovering ways to get more while looking to find the magic in having bigger, more muscular bodies. The majority of these young users minimize the potential adverse effect that these substances can cause. But steroids addiction can create a wide range of adverse effects.

The following is a list of adverse reactions that adolescent struggling with anabolic steroid addiction may experience: steroid-induced acne, anti-hypertensive behaviors, hypertension or fatigue, chronic gonadotrophin or (HCG), testicular atrophy and induced gynecomastia.

With these effects, it is not unusual for heavy anabolic steroid users to use other substances to treat these adverse conditions. This allows anabolic steroid black market dealers to stock up on several other kinds of prescription and street drugs to sell to the users. This can also bring to life multiple addictions, not just to steroids but to all the other drugs they start taking.

To discover if teens have a steroids addiction, we need to look at the different classifications of anabolic steroid preparations. Presently, there are ten main classes of anabolic steroids. They are classified in groups based on the route of administration and the type of carrier solvent used to introduce the steroid into the body.

The ten classes are:
1. Oral
2. Injectable oil-based
3. Injectable water-based
4. Patch or gel
5. Aerosol, propellant based preparation
6. Sublingual
7. Homemade transdermal preparation
8. Androgen- estrogen Definition of the word estrogen combination
9. Counterfeit anabolic steroid
10. Over the counter (OTC)

Steroids Indicators

These preparations have a wide variety of ways that can cause them to be misused. Prescription steroids are classified as a schedule III regulated drug, including the counterfeit ones. Veterinarians utilize the over-the-counter or anabolic steroids making it easier for dealers to get illicitly.

The followings are some indicators of steroid use or substance addiction:

  • Fast weight gain with larger muscle mass
  • Aggressiveness and bad attitude
  • Jaundice/skin change
  • Purple or red spots on the body
  • Swelling of feet and lower legs
  • Shaking or trembling
  • Persistent body odors
  • Acne breakouts with oily skin

When steroids are used with a program of muscle building, there is an augmentation in body weight and muscular strength. Those adolescents who are steroid addicts subject themselves to all the side effects mentioned above. Education and honesty are the best ways to help fight steroid addiction among our youth.

Adolescents need help focusing on better ways to obtain a higher quality of living – a life free from not only anabolic steroids but also from illegal drugs and alcohol. We must teach these children ways to replace narcotics and other harmful substances with healthy alternatives. It is only through knowledge and time spent with our adolescents whom we can hope to raise well-adjusted kids who have been given the tools to cope with life on life’s terms.
