It interestingly enough the largest city located on the Cape Breton Island with just thirty-thousand people living within its buildings and around its streets. The city of Sydney is known best for, what else, but its fishing industry, just like many of the other cities and communities located alongside the eastern coast of Canada.
Unfortunately, even this far east of mainland the drug-related problems occur; however, these issues are definitely minimal. A population of only thirty-thousand will have no possible way of meeting or experiencing the degree of difficulties that massive cities such as Toronto or Vancouver go through, but it is imperative not to overlook them. When people ignore such warnings and issues, they will only tend to worsen. This will result in years of reestablishing the city and correcting a devastating drug outbreak. Of course, it would be much worse to leave the city if the problems were in dense areas such as Toronto.
As an urban area, and the largest one within its region, Sydney is the hardest hit community for drug-related problems on Cape Breton Island. Of course, as most other cities the issues are situated within the young adult and teenage age groups, and the busiest areas of the city. Researchers believe that this is simply due to the fact that teenagers and young adults have difficulties telling right from wrong and vice versa. Their beliefs and values have not yet developed in full, and they are much more likely to partake in drug-related activities. It is also a common thought that peer pressure and social acceptance have a lot to do with this. Teenagers and college students what to feel accepted for who they are and this will often result in constant pressure from their peers to do drugs. By doing this, the average teenager will “fit” in with the other teenagers and gain more friends. Unfortunately, they are doing this for without thinking correctly. Instead of considering the benefits, they should be weighing the disadvantages out completely, as there really are no advantages at all. Furthermore, the more active areas within the city, the more there is at a tendency to include bars and clubs, which are popular for high drug-advocated activity. This is due to large quantities of individuals being isolated within a few select locations, and not being in a widespread manner.
While education regarding drug use and abuse is efficient, it is already being performed within the city of Sydney. If the city wants to reduce the number of drug problems that occur, the city officials must become stricter when trying to enforce laws. Police officers should also be provided with the right tools they need to correct the issue and catch individuals. Once teenagers recognize the crime penalties associated with drugs, and realize the chances of getting caught are real, many of them will cease any such activity.
