What Is Hydrocodone?

Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic pain reliever and is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Hydrocodone is synthesized from codeine and is also used as a cough suppressant, along with being combined with acetaminophen and ibuprofen for increased pain relief. Hydrocodone is a highly addictive drug and does create dependency, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms. Within Canada, hydrocodone is used to reduce exhausting dry cough and has been marketed in the country since the 1950s. Hydrocodone works on the brain to decrease the urge to cough and is available under multiple brand names and in several different forms. When prescribed as a cough suppressant, it is given as a syrup, and as a pain medication it is prescribed as a tablet and can also be used intravenously when given in hospitals.

Opioid abuse is a common problem all throughout Canada, and drugs such as hydrocodone are widely abused. Hydrocodone and other drugs like it can be accessed illegally and are abused by Canadians across the country. If you are struggling with an addiction to hydrocodone, you must seek out help. Opioid addiction only becomes worse and your tolerance for the drug continues to grow the longer you remain on it. Treatment for a hydrocodone addiction involves a medical detox to manage the withdrawal pain, followed by inpatient treatment and rehab. Most opioid addicts will also pursue aftercare treatment, to further improve their ability to maintain sobriety. Opioids are highly addictive and create intense physical and psychological addictions.
